The weekly routine
Mounjaro is administered once per week, on the same day each week. It can be administered at any time of day, with or without food. If changing the day that the medication is administered, there should be at least three days between injections.
The digestive effects. Nausea, diarrhoea, vomiting and constipation are the effects that are most often reported. Eating smaller meals, stopping when feeling full and avoiding fatty food can all reduce these effects. These effects will typically improve after several weeks. Should persistent vomiting be experienced it is worth reporting to the prescribing doctor, as dehydration can result from vomiting and this is the complication that can cause harm.
A warning sign. Severe abdominal pain that does not subside, and pain that spreads to the back with vomiting, requires an urgent assessment by a doctor. Although pancreatitis is a rare condition, the possibility of this diagnosis must be considered.

Where should Mounjaro be injected?
Under the skin of the abdomen, the thigh or the upper arm. The injection site should be rotated each week. Injecting repeatedly into the same small area can make the tissue lumpy or thickened, and absorption from a hardened site is unreliable, which makes the effect less predictable than it should be.
What happens if a weekly dose is missed?
If a weekly dose of this medication is missed, the missed dose can be taken within four days of the day that the drug was supposed to be taken. If more than four days have passed, the missed dose should be skipped and the next scheduled dose taken on the normal day. Two doses should not be taken close to one another to make up the missed dose.
Do the digestive side effects settle down?
For most people the digestive side effects tend to settle down. They are typically worst in the days after increasing the dose, and will ease over the following few weeks as the body adjusts. If the side effects worsen rather than improve, or if they prevent someone from eating and drinking normally, it is a reason to speak to a doctor about the medication.
How does 5mg differ from the 2.5mg starting dose?
The drug is the same at both strengths and the routine is the same. The 2.5mg dosage is used to allow the body to adjust to the medication and is not intended as a treatment dose. The 5mg dosage is the first one used to provide the effect of the medication itself. It is possible that the side effects will return following a dosage increase, but this is expected and typically short lived.
