3-CMC is a synthetic cathinone, a stimulant with the same chemical skeleton as methcathinone. It made its European market debut in September 2014, in a seizure of 0.72 grams of powder in Norrkoping, Sweden. For seven years it went almost nowhere. Then the Dutch ban on 3-MMC left a gap, and 3-CMC became the powder that filled it.
3-CMC is not a licensed medicine and legitimate pharmacies do not dispense it.
How it reaches the market
It is sold by the gram, and very often sold as something else. In 2023 the Dutch testing service DIMS found that only about 30% of samples submitted as 3-MMC actually contained 3-MMC. Most of the rest held 3-CMC, 2-MMC or dimethylpentylone. Those samples averaged 18.60 euro a gram, and submissions of them more than doubled against 2022. Supply is not marginal, with over 19 tonnes seized across the EU in each of 2022 and 2023.
The advantages people report
Users report the typical cathinone effects of stimulation, euphoria and increased energy, which is why it substituted for 3-MMC so readily. The EU Drugs Agency notes that cathinones are central nervous system stimulants, though less potent than the matching phenethylamine, and that their effects can resemble those of cocaine, amphetamine or MDMA depending on the compound.

What is 3-CMC?
Its full name is 3-chloromethcathinone, and it also goes by clophedrone. It acts as a substrate for the monoamine transporters, which means it causes the brain to release dopamine, noradrenaline and serotonin rather than only blocking their reuptake.
How long does 3CMC last and what is the comedown like?
The honest answer is that 3-CMC itself has not been properly characterised, and its half-life is only described as short. Users report it is similar to 3-MMC but weaker. Oral 3-MMC runs about 4 to 6 hours, with effects starting within 10 to 30 minutes, or roughly 2.5 to 4.5 hours snorted. The comedown people describe is the compulsive re-dosing pattern catching up with them.
Is 3-CMC legal?
No. The EU adopted control measures on 3-CMC in March 2022. The Netherlands placed it on List I of the Opium Act, the hard drug list, on 12 September 2023. The Commission on Narcotic Drugs then added it to Schedule II of the 1971 Convention on Psychotropic Substances in March 2024.
How is it different from 3-MMC?
One atom, in practice. 3-MMC carries a methyl group on the ring of the molecule where 3-CMC carries a chlorine atom. The market treats the two as interchangeable, which is why so much material sold as one turns out to be the other.
