What is doxycycline 100mg used for?
Chest and sinus infections. Acne and rosacea. Lyme disease. Several sexually transmitted infections. For chlamydia, the 2025 European guideline recommends doxycycline instead of the single dose of azithromycin that was used for years.
How it's taken. The standard adult dose is doxycycline 100mg twice a day. For chlamydia the course is seven days of that regimen. For acne the dose runs over a period of months at a lower dosage.
Malaria prevention uses a different schedule. You take 100mg of doxycycline once a day. Take it one or two days before you go travelling. Continue to take the medicine every day while you are away from home. Take it for four more weeks after you return home from your travels. Doxycycline does not kill the malaria parasite in the liver. If the drug is stopped too soon, the malaria can show up weeks later.
Swallow the capsule with a full glass of water. Remain sitting or standing for half an hour afterwards. The capsule could lead to an ulcer if it gets stuck in the oesophagus.
