First described in 1929 by Saem de Burnaga Sanchez, mephedrone remained unexamined for around seventy years. In 2003 an anonymous chemist named Kinetic published a synthesis for the drug on The Hive, an online forum for chemists. By 2007 it was for sale online. Law enforcement first took an interest in 2008, and by 2010 it had spread to most of Europe, with the United Kingdom the worst affected.
4-MMC is not a licensed medicine and legitimate pharmacies do not dispense it.
How it reaches the market
Mephedrone is sold as a powder measured in grams. It is an unusual drug because it is the displaced one. The Dutch organisation DIMS tests samples handed in by the people who bought them. In 2023 it gave 3-MMC its own profile and gave mephedrone none, recording 3-MMC and 4-MMC together as 6% of all samples submitted that year.
The advantages people report
Users report feelings of stimulation, euphoria and sociability, which is the reason for the drug's rapid spread. The EU Drugs Agency states that cathinones are central nervous system stimulants of lower potency than the corresponding phenethylamine, and that their effects can resemble those of cocaine, amphetamine or MDMA depending on the compound.

What is 4-MMC?
4-MMC is mephedrone. It is a synthetic cathinone, one of a group of compounds named after cathinone, the stimulant found in the khat plant. It is the compound that the later cathinones were built to replace.
How long does mephedrone last?
The effects begin within minutes of snorting the drug, or 15 to 45 minutes after taking it orally, and last approximately 2 to 4 hours. Only 7% of an oral dose is bioavailable, because most of it is destroyed on first passing through the liver, which is why insufflation became the common route.
Is 4-MMC legal?
No. It was banned in Israel in 2008 before the United Kingdom passed legislation on 16 April 2010 classifying it as a Class B drug. The EU followed in December of that year. The Commission on Narcotic Drugs added it to Schedule II of the 1971 Convention in March 2015 under Decision 58/1.
How does it relate to 3-MMC and 3-CMC?
