What is armodafinil used for?
Armodafinil is used to treat excessive sleepiness caused by narcolepsy, obstructive sleep apnoea and shift work sleep disorder. In the case of sleep apnoea it is used in addition to the main treatment, as it does nothing to help with the breathing problem itself.
Its status differs by country. Armodafinil is approved in the United States, where it is sold under the brand name Nuvigil. It is not separately authorised in the European Union. The closely related modafinil is authorised in the European Union, where the European Medicines Agency has restricted its use to treating narcolepsy since 2011.
How it is taken. The usual dose of armodafinil is 150mg or 250mg once a day. For narcolepsy and sleep apnoea it is taken in the morning. For shift work sleep disorder the dose is taken about an hour before the start of the shift. A steady level in the blood is reached after about a week.
The contraceptive interaction. Armodafinil reduces the effectiveness of hormonal contraceptives. Levels of the contraceptive in the blood can fall by around eighteen percent when the two are taken together. Anyone using a hormonal method needs an additional method of contraception, or a switch to a non-hormonal one, while taking armodafinil and for one month after stopping it.
Side effects of armodafinil 150mg. The common side effects of armodafinil are headache, nausea, dizziness and trouble sleeping. Trouble sleeping is the one that catches people out, since taking the medication late in the day can lead to insomnia that night. Anxiety and a faster heartbeat are also reported.

Armodafinil is one of the two mirror-image forms that make up modafinil. Modafinil contains both forms of the drug, while armodafinil contains only one. How long does armodafinil last?
