LSD emerged from ergot research at the Sandoz laboratories in Basel in 1938. It is active in the tens of micrograms, making it one of the few substances measured in millionths of a gram rather than milligrams.
How these blotters reach the market
They are sold as squares of paper. The Dutch testing service DIMS recorded that 1.4% of everything submitted in 2023 was LSD. On average a blotter costs 5.90 euro, with half of the market trading between 4 and 8 euro.
The number on this one
DIMS measured the average content of blotter samples tested in 2023 at 54 micrograms, down from 72 micrograms in 2022. A blotter advertised at 180 micrograms is three and a third times the average square on the Dutch market. The EU Drugs Agency puts typical doses today at 20 to 80 micrograms, which places 180 well above that entire range.
The advantages people report
The effects are hallucinogenic and, more importantly, last a long time, which is part of what people are looking for. The EU Drugs Agency describes geometric shapes and patterns seen with the eyes open or closed, flashes of intense colour, objects that appear to move and dissolve, synaesthesia where sounds evoke colours, and a perception of time that appears to slow down.

Common questions
Why is LSD measured in micrograms?
Because it is active at doses as low as 20 to 50 micrograms, which is a range where milligrams would be a useless unit. A microgram is a thousandth of a milligram, so the entire active range of this drug falls inside a rounding error on a scale made for measuring anything else.
Can you tell how strong a blotter is by looking at it?
No. The paper carries whatever solution was applied to it and then dried. Nothing about the size of the square, the artwork on it or the name attached to the batch tells you how much reached that particular piece of paper.
Can something else be sold as LSD?
Yes. Dutch monitoring lists LSD-like substances and, less often, entirely different compounds such as NBOMes in material sold as LSD. NBOMes are also active in the microgram range, so the format itself gives no way of telling them apart.
