What is buprenorphine 8mg used for?
Opioid dependence. Substitution therapy is provided as part of a comprehensive treatment programme that includes medical and psychological support. The drug is a partial opioid agonist, meaning it acts on the same receptors as heroin and methadone, but with a weaker and flatter effect.
Timing the first dose. The first dose has to wait. If you take buprenorphine while another opioid is still active in your system, you risk being thrown into sudden and severe withdrawal. The advice is to wait at least six hours after a short-acting opioid, and around twenty-four hours after methadone, or until withdrawal symptoms from the previous opioid have clearly started.
The mixing risk. The real danger with buprenorphine is mixing it with other drugs. It has a ceiling on how far it can depress breathing, which is part of why it is considered safer than methadone. That safety does not hold when benzodiazepines or alcohol are also taken. Deaths have been recorded from this combination.
Side effects of buprenorphine 8mg. Headache, nausea, constipation, sweating and trouble sleeping may appear at the beginning of treatment, but generally subside with time. Liver problems can arise, so blood tests are usual at the start of treatment and during it.

How long does buprenorphine 8mg last?
A full day or longer. This is why it is given as a single daily dose. Some programmes provide a higher dose every second day for the same reason. The long action is also why missing a single day does not usually bring on immediate withdrawal, though doses should not be skipped.
Why does buprenorphine 8mg go under the tongue?
Because the liver would strip out most of the drug if it were swallowed. Held under the tongue, it passes directly into the bloodstream through the lining of the mouth. It takes several minutes to dissolve, and eating or drinking during that time reduces the dose you actually get.
What is the difference between buprenorphine and Suboxone?
Suboxone is buprenorphine with naloxone added. The naloxone does almost nothing when taken as intended under the tongue. If the tablet or film is dissolved and injected, however, the naloxone will trigger withdrawal. It is not there to treat anything, only to make misuse of the drug unrewarding.
