Co-codamol tablets are, essentially, paracetamol tablets too, so taking a cold medicine that also contains paracetamol can easily double your daily intake.
Dependence and coming off it. Give it more than a fortnight of daily use and the body adapts. That is physical dependence, which is not the same as addiction and is not a question of character. It means the body has adjusted to the presence of the drug and will protest when it is withdrawn.
The clock on withdrawal is fairly predictable. It starts between 8 and 24 hours after the last dose. Days 1 to 3 are the worst of it. By somewhere between day 4 and day 10 the physical side has largely gone. Sleep, mood and cravings take longer and can wear on for several weeks. Coming off it in stages is far kinder than quitting dead.
