What is codeine 10mg used for?
Mild to moderate pain that paracetamol and ibuprofen have not settled. Codeine is added to the mix of those two rather than used in their place, which is why many products contain both ingredients in one tablet.
Why the same dose does not suit everyone. Codeine does very little by itself. It is converted into morphine in the liver by an enzyme called CYP2D6. Some people have different versions of the gene that makes this enzyme. Poor metabolisers produce very little morphine from codeine and so get very little relief from the drug. Ultra-rapid metabolisers produce large amounts of morphine from the same tablet, which is why codeine is contraindicated in these patients.
Dose and limits. The adult dose of codeine ranges from 30mg to 60mg every four hours as needed, with a hard ceiling of 240mg in 24 hours. Ten milligrams is well below one standard dose of codeine. Children under the age of 12 should not take codeine at all.
Side effects of codeine 10mg. Constipation, sleepiness, nausea and dry mouth are the usual four. Constipation is the one that persists over time, so it is worth treating from the first day rather than waiting to see.

Is codeine phosphate 10mg a strong painkiller?
Not by itself. At ten milligrams, which is one third of the usual 30mg dose for an adult, codeine is a relatively light painkiller on its own. It has its place in combination with paracetamol, since the two work on pain in different ways and the codeine adds to what the paracetamol is already doing.
How long does codeine 10mg take to work?
Around 30 to 60 minutes for most people, though it can take closer to one or two hours for the full effect. This is because the liver has to convert codeine into morphine first. If nothing has happened after two hours, taking another dose early is the wrong move.
Can you take codeine 10mg tablets with paracetamol?
Yes. This is the normal way to take it. The trap is taking too much paracetamol without noticing, because combination tablets already contain 500mg of paracetamol each. Adding separate paracetamol on top of those can put you over the daily limit quickly.
