  • Pack: Loose plaster
  • Category: Pain Relief

The 20 mcg patch is the top of the seven-day range. It releases twenty micrograms an hour, four times the starting patch. Nobody arrives here quickly, since the strength is reached in steps of at least three days.

What is the 20 mcg buprenorphine patch for?

This is for chronic pain that has not settled on the lower patches, in people already used to opioids. The same rules apply as at every strength. It is not for short-lived pain, and not for pain straight after an operation.

Heat is the real danger. Heat drives absorption up. A sauna, a hot bath, a heat pad, an electric blanket or strong sun on the patch can push far more of the drug into the blood than intended. Finland's medicines agency has warned that wearing an opioid patch in a sauna can cause life-threatening poisoning. A high fever does the same thing from the inside, so tell your doctor if your temperature goes above 39C while wearing one.

Disposing of a used patch. A used patch still holds a good deal of buprenorphine. Fold it in half with the sticky sides pressed together before throwing it away. Keep used and unused patches away from children and pets, since a discarded patch on the floor is a genuine danger to a small child.

Side effects at 20 mcg. Drowsiness, nausea and constipation are the usual complaints and can be stronger at this level. Slow or shallow breathing, unusual sleepiness or confusion are not side effects to wait out. Call 112.

Common questions

Can you have a sauna or a hot bath with a buprenorphine patch?

No. Heat raises how much buprenorphine crosses the skin, and a sauna or hot bath can lift it to dangerous levels. Finland's medicines agency has warned that this can be life-threatening. Warm showers are fine. Saunas, hot tubs, heat pads and electric blankets are not.

How do you dispose of a used buprenorphine patch?

Fold the used patch in half with the adhesive sides stuck together, then put it out of reach of children and pets. A used patch still contains buprenorphine, which is why it should never be left in an open bin. Your pharmacy will take unused patches back.

Is 20 mcg the strongest buprenorphine patch?

It is the strongest of the seven-day patches. Other buprenorphine patch systems exist at higher release rates and shorter wear times, and those are different products on different schedules. Moving beyond 20 mcg is a prescriber's decision about which system to use, not a matter of adding patches.
