HASH La Mousse: Why Hash Is Roughly Twice the Strength of Weed
- Pack: Loose gram

Hash is resin. Whereas cannabis flower contains the trichomes that hold most of the cannabinoids in the plant, hash is the resin that is formed by separating those trichomes from the cannabis plant and compressing them to remove the other components of the plant that were diluting the potency of the cannabinoids. Weed is the flower with all of that still attached.
Cannabis is not dispensed in the form of hash.
What that does to the numbers
The Trimbos THC Monitor has been measuring the THC content of cannabis from Dutch coffeeshops since 1999. In 2024, hash made from nederwiet contained, on average, 26.4% THC. The same survey found that imported hash contained 22.1% THC. The best selling nederwiet contained 13.8% THC. Hash is therefore close to twice the strength of the flower that is sold beside it in these establishments.
Why that gap is the practical point
People typically do not carry a dose, they carry a weight. The amount of hash is not equivalent to the amount of weed, though the two figures are roughly a factor of two apart before considering any other differences in the products.
Nederhasj against imported
At least within the domestic product, the percentage is higher than the imported product (26.4% against 22.1%). Both percentages are higher than the flower percentage, though the difference between the two percentages is less important than the difference between these two categories of products.
The advantages people report
Less of the hash is required to achieve the same effect as the flower, and it keeps better than the flower does. The EU Drugs Agency lists euphoria, relief of anxiety, sedation and drowsiness as effects of small doses of cannabis, though the agency notes that this profile resembles alcohol in some respects.
The disadvantages
The THC content is responsible for the unwanted effects of cannabis, principally anxiety and a racing heart, and the higher the concentration of THC, the lower the amount of cannabis needed to produce such effects. The EU Drugs Agency states that there is little evidence of organ damage caused by moderate cannabis use. However, smoking cannabis in combination with tobacco exposes the smoker to the risks of tobacco use. The metabolites of cannabis can be detected in a smoker's urine up to two weeks after smoking.
What a pharmacist would flag
Cannabis is not dispensed in the form of hash. In the Netherlands, when it is prescribed it comes in the form of standardised flower or oil containing a stated percentage of cannabinoids. Such a percentage is the whole reason why the dispensing and prescribing of cannabis is regulated by the government.

Common questions
Is a measurement from 2024 comparable to older figures?
Not reliably. Trimbos switched to a more accurate method of analysis in 2023. Any differences between the results of cannabis products today and those measured in previous years cannot be relied upon. However, the results of the recent editions of the THC monitor can be compared with each other.
Does a name like La Mousse describe a strength?
No. Hash comes under different names based on its place of origin and texture, as well as the individual branders of the product. The THC Monitor does not report the THC content of the different brands of hash, as the names of these products do not reflect their contents.
Why is Dutch hash stronger than imported hash?
The THC Monitor measures the amount of THC in a sample of hash without explaining why the figure is as it is. The figure is an average of the contents of several samples of hash, so it is possible for any individual sample to have a higher content of THC.
