A blotter is a delivery format for solutions before it is anything else. The solution goes onto an absorbent paper sheet, which is then dried and perforated into squares. The artwork is printed onto the sheet of paper before any solutions are added to the blotter paper, so the design belongs to the printing process and not to the chemistry.
What a design identifies
It identifies a print run. If each person has access to the same image file, they can print out the same sheet. Each sheet can contain the same artwork but may come from different people and contain different amounts of the solution with different concentrations. The name attached to a run is a label a seller uses to tell one batch from another, and it contains no information regarding the strength or origin of the solution.
How they reach the market
DIMS recorded that LSD was 1.4% of everything submitted to them in 2023. The average cost of a blotter was 5.90 euro. Half of all blotters cost between 4 and 8 euro.
The advantages people report
LSD blotters have long lasting hallucinogenic effects and are easy to divide into two to halve the dosage. According to the EU Drugs Agency, LSD users will typically report seeing geometric shapes and patterns with their eyes open or closed, flashes of intense colour, objects in their environment appearing to move and dissolve, synaesthesia where sounds are seen as colours, and time appearing to slow down.
The substitution problem
Dutch monitoring reports two kinds of adulteration in the material sold as LSD. The first is substances similar to LSD. The second is compounds completely different from LSD, such as the NBOMes, which are also active in microgram quantities. Blotters are the perfect way of delivering these substances but the wrong way of attempting to differentiate between them.

Common questions
Does the artwork indicate the dose?
No. The sheets may be labelled with the nominal amount of LSD in the sheet, but that amount comes from whoever is making the sheet, and the artwork is printed prior to the LSD ever touching the sheet.
What is an NBOMe?
A separate family of compounds that has shown up in material sold as LSD. Each of these compounds is active in the microgram quantities and so suits the format of blotter sheets, and they are considerably more dangerous than LSD.
How would anyone know what is really on a square?
Only by having it analysed. A drug checking service will be able to identify the substance and the amount of the substance contained within the product. The appearance, taste and artwork of the product have no bearing on it.
