LSD Zegels: How Blotters Are Made and Why Two Squares Are Not the Same

The Dutch word means stamp, which is close to literal. A zegel is a small square of absorbent paper that has had a solution containing LSD applied to it. It is simply the paper on which the LSD sits; it contains nothing else.

Why the strength of a square is an estimate

Blotters are made by treating a sheet of blotter paper and cutting it into squares. Any unevenness of the spread of the LSD on the sheet will be reflected on the squares out of which it is cut; no effort is made to ensure that each square contains an even amount of LSD. The nominal amount is the amount that was intended by whoever prepared the sheet.

What the testing figures show

DIMS measured the average blotter it received in 2023 at 54 micrograms. In 2022, the average was 72 micrograms. Such a reduction of a quarter of the average strength in a twelve month period indicates again that the average is representative of the blotter market at a given moment, rather than a consistent attribute of the product. The EU Drugs Agency reports that typical doses of LSD contain between 20 and 80 micrograms.

How they reach the market

LSD accounted for 1.4% of everything that DIMS was given in 2023. The average price of a square was 5.90 euro, with half of all products priced between 4 and 8 euro.

The advantages people report

The effects of LSD are known to be hallucinogenic and to last for many hours. According to the EU Drugs Agency, individuals who use LSD report experiencing geometric shapes and patterns with their eyes open or closed, flashes of intense colour, movement of objects in the world, synaesthesia (experiences with sounds translated to colours), and a slowing of time.

Common questions

Why did the average blotter get weaker between 2022 and 2023?

The figures record the change in potency without explaining why. What the drop demonstrates is that the strength of the blotter is set by whoever is producing the sheets and that the strength changes between sheets.

Do two squares from one sheet contain the same amount?

There is no reason to assume that they do. Although the squares are cut from the same sheet of treated paper, there is no way of ensuring that each square contains the same amount of the active ingredient, so the figure represented by each sheet is an average of the potency of the squares within that sheet.

Is a zegel different from a blotter?

No. Although the word zegel is used to refer to Dutch blotter, it is merely the Dutch word for the same object: a square of paper that contains a dried solution.
