MDMA Puur: From a Merck Patent to a Powder, and What Clinicians Report

MDMA was first made in 1912 by Anton Kollisch, a chemist at Merck, as a step towards a compound that would help to stop bleeding. It was patented as a means of working around a competitor's patent, not for any effect it had on people. No trials were performed to determine what it did. Merck reviewed its pharmacology in 1927 and again in 1959, and neither review included testing in humans.
The years it was a therapy
It was only when Alexander Shulgin began self-trials in 1976 that MDMA reached anyone else. In 1977 he introduced it to Leo Zeff, a psychotherapist. Zeff trained around 150 therapists over time, who treated more than 4,000 patients with it, all lawfully, until the United States placed it in Schedule I in 1985. That is an unusual history for a drug in this catalogue, because for about eight years it had a clinical use and a professional literature.
How the powder reaches the market
MDMA powder accounted for 9% of everything submitted to the Dutch testing service DIMS in 2023. Pills represented 58% of submissions, so powder is the minority format by a wide margin.
Powder against pills
With pills the dose is set by whoever operated the press, and the buyer finds out afterwards. With powder the dose is set by the person weighing it out, which makes a set of scales the difference between a measured dose and a guess. The average strength of MDMA pills sold in the Netherlands in 2023 was 138mg.
The advantages people report
DIMS lists a sense of intimacy, increased energy and euphoria. The EU Drugs Agency adds an increased awareness of sensory input, describes the drug as causing mild central stimulation, and notes that the terms empathogenic and entactogenic were coined for its socialising effect.

Common questions
Why was MDMA legal for therapists until 1985?
Because it had never been scheduled. As an obscure Merck intermediate with no recognised use in humans, when Shulgin reintroduced it in the 1970s there was nothing prohibiting its clinical use. Zeff and the therapists he trained worked in that gap for around eight years, and it closed when recreational use grew and the United States scheduled the drug.
Does powder mean it is pure?
No. Puur describes the format of the product rather than a tested result. Powder removes the press from the equation, which is a real difference, but nothing about it verifies what the powder is or how much of it is MDMA.
What turns up in MDMA that should not be there?
In the Dutch pill figures the substances named were caffeine, amphetamine rarely, cathinones, and PMMA very rarely. PMMA is the one that matters most, because it is slower to come on than MDMA, and that delay is what leads people to take a second dose.
