Oxycodone 10mg: Immediate-Release, Modified-Release and What Changes

  • Pack: Loose tab
  • Category: Pain Relief
  • Availability: Sold out

Oxycodone 10mg is where the two forms of the drug meet. The immediate-release tablets are taken every four to six hours when pain is present, whereas the modified-release tablets are taken twice a day. Both contain the same drug at the same strength and behave completely differently.

What is oxycodone and how does it work?

Oxycodone works on the same opioid receptors in the brain and spinal cord that morphine works on. It does not repair whatever is causing the pain. What it changes is how strongly the pain signal registers, which is why people so often describe the pain as still being there but mattering less.

The two 10mg tablets. The immediate-release tablet gives a fast rise and a short run, which suits pain that comes and goes. The modified-release tablet releases slowly across twelve hours, which suits pain that is there all the time. Taking one when you needed the other is a common and avoidable mistake.

Which one you have. Check the box before the first dose. Modified-release products carry a marker in the name, such as MR, or retard in several European countries, or a brand name such as OxyContin. If the pack has none of those, it is the immediate-release tablet. Tablets are supplied loose rather than in a strip, so the box is the thing to read.

Side effects of oxycodone 10mg. Constipation, drowsiness, nausea and dry mouth are the common complaints at this strength. Drowsiness is more prominent during the first days and after any increase in dose. Breathing that slows or turns shallow is a different matter and needs urgent help.

Common questions

What is the difference between oxycodone 10mg and OxyContin 10 mg?

Same drug, same strength, different release. OxyContin is a brand of oxycodone that is modified-release and taken twice a day. A plain oxycodone 10mg tablet is usually the immediate-release form, taken every four to six hours. The two are not interchangeable, and changing one for the other changes how the whole day is covered.

How does oxycodone work?

By acting on opioid receptors in the brain and spinal cord, damping down how the pain signal is received rather than treating its cause. That is also why the side effects are what they are: the same receptors sit in the gut, which is where the constipation comes from.

Can you cut an oxycodone 10mg tablet in half?

Never with a modified-release tablet. Cutting, crushing or chewing one destroys the mechanism that spreads the dose over twelve hours, releasing it all at once, which can be fatal. Immediate-release tablets are sometimes scored for splitting, but always ask your pharmacist before halving a tablet you have not split before.
