The Trimbos THC Monitor has sampled the cannabis sold in Dutch coffeeshops every year since 1999. In 2024 the best selling nederwiet contained 13.8% THC and the strongest 14.7%. In 2025 the best seller contained 15.6% THC and the strongest 17.4%.
The most useful thing in those figures
The gap between the best selling and strongest is small. In 2024 it was under one percentage point. This shows that the Dutch market is not divided into ordinary weed and much stronger weed, and that the name of a strain is a weaker predictor of content than people tend to assume.
What a strain name does describe
The name of a strain describes its genetic lineage. The lineage of a strain like Amnesia Haze is recognised and well established. What it is not is a specification, particularly for the percentage of THC, because that depends on how that particular crop was grown, harvested and cured.
Why the same name varies
Two growers working with the same genetics will produce flower of different percentages. There is no record of the light, nutrients, timing or curing in the name of the strain, and all of those play a role in the THC present in the flower.
The advantages people report
The name of a strain provides some indication of character, and coffeeshop products are sold in a regulated retail setting where the same names recur. The EU Drugs Agency notes that the effects of small doses of cannabis include euphoria, relief of anxiety, sedation and drowsiness, resembling the effects of alcohol in some respects.

Is Amnesia Haze unusually strong?
The monitor does not keep figures for each strain that is sold. Instead the percentage of THC is published for the best selling product and for the strongest on offer, and in recent editions those two figures sat within a few percentage points of each other.
Has Dutch weed been getting stronger?
The best selling product went from 13.8% THC in 2024 to 15.6% in 2025. Comparisons reaching further back are not reliable, because Trimbos changed its method for measuring THC in 2023 and says differences against earlier years cannot be depended on.
Does a higher percentage mean a better product?
It means more THC by weight. Whether that is desirable depends on the person using it, and the potential for adverse effects rises with the amount of THC in the product.
