XTC is not a drug, but the format in which pills that are expected to contain MDMA can be sold to those who attend the nightlife in particular. The drug contained within one of these pills, however, is not MDMA, but mephedrone. Mephedrone is a synthetic cathinone, a different substance from the MDMA contained within ecstasy pills.
Why this matters
Testing in the Netherlands has revealed that cathinones are amongst the substances that have been found within the pills that are sold as ecstasy on the market. Only testing can reveal whether the pill that is purchased and sold as ecstasy contains the cathinone rather than MDMA. The shorter duration of action of the cathinone to MDMA leads to compulsions of the individuals who consume the drug to consume the drug again, the same effect that is experienced with the consumption of mephedrone.
