A mixed colour batch is not a product decision, it is a record of the manufacturing process. The colour of the pills comes from the materials that were added to the powder prior to pressing the tablets. If the colour of the pills changes, it indicates that the materials that entered the pressing process have changed. If there are two colours of pills produced, there were at least two separate runs of the process to create those tablets.
Why that matters more than it sounds
Each run of the process creates pills that were made from separate mixes of the ingredients. The ratio of the active ingredient to the filler is not guaranteed to be the same between different batches. The only way to determine from which batch a tablet was produced is by its colour. Anyone who considers a batch of pills that contain mixed colours to be a single batch is making an assumption that contradicts the colour of the tablets alone.
The number on this one
The average dosage of ecstasy pills measured by DIMS in 2023 was 138mg, although the middle half of the market sold between 117mg and 163mg. Pills advertising 300mg of MDMA are more than twice the average dosage, and hit the Red Alert level of DIMS in December 2023. The EU Drugs Agency has also found fatalities after taking doses of 300mg of MDMA, though note that the toxicity depends on individual susceptibility and the circumstances of use.
How pills reach the market
Ecstasy accounted for 58% of all products received by DIMS in 2023, averaging 4.10 euro for each pill.
The advantages people report
DIMS records a sense of intimacy, energy and euphoria from ecstasy pills. The EU Drugs Agency states that MDMA increases sensory awareness and acts as a mild central stimulant, and the terms empathogenic and entactogenic were coined to describe its socialising effect.

Common questions
Does the colour affect the strength?
Not directly, as the colourant is not active. The different colours indicate that there are different mixes, and that the difference in strength between ecstasy pills comes from these different mixes.
Can two pills from the same bag differ?
Yes, as a colour difference is direct evidence that the pills came from different production runs. However, even within a single production run, pills of the same colour can differ from each other, because pressing does not guarantee an even distribution of powder.
Why would anyone make a mixed batch?
Because the colour of the pills is cosmetic, and separating different production runs by colour costs the producer money. Mixing the pills together for sale is the cheaper option, and the buyer absorbs the uncertainty it creates.
