When taken by mouth, MDMA does not immediately arrive at those who take the drug. For a period after they have swallowed the MDMA pills, nothing happens. However, after the effects of the initial dose of MDMA fail to meet the expectations of those who took the drug, they will take another dose. Both doses will enter their systems at the same time, leading to the total amount of MDMA that is taken being the two doses taken at once.

According to DIMS, ecstasy pills produce feelings of intimacy, energy and euphoria. The EU Drugs Agency also noted that ecstasy increases sensory awareness and causes a mild central stimulation. Terms empathogenic and entactogenic have been coined to refer to the socialising effect of the drug.

Why does the second pill cause the problem rather than the first?
Because the first has not finished arriving. Ultimately, what matters is the total amount of the drug in the body. Taking a second ecstasy pill before the first has peaked will result in a total dose that is neither of the two ecstasy pills that were taken individually.
Is PMMA relevant here?
Yes, and it is the sharpest version of the same trap. While PMMA has been identified within Dutch ecstasy pills it is rarely encountered. Indeed, the onset of PMMA tends to be more protracted than that of MDMA, so taking a pill that contains PMMA can result in the sensation of taking a pill that has not worked.
Does a bigger pill make waiting more important or less?
More. The consequence of adding to a large dose is larger, and the margin that would have absorbed a mistake is already spent.
