What is bromazepam used for?
Bromazepam is licensed for treating anxiety that is severe and disabling, not the type that people feel daily. It is not the first choice for treating anxiety, and it is not for mild forms of anxiety or for stress that will pass on its own.
How it is taken. The adult dose for anxiety is 6mg to 18mg a day, divided into two to four doses. The 6mg tablet is normally part of the daily doses divided for that individual rather than being taken for the whole day in one go. The half-life of the drug is around 17 hours, meaning it is still in the system on the following day.
Short-term use only. Treatment is meant to last between two and four weeks, which includes the time spent coming off the medication. Benzodiazepines lose some of their effect after a few weeks, so the longer someone is taking them, the more likely they are to become dependent on the drug. Any period of treatment beyond four weeks should be a deliberate decision by the doctor and patient, not one that is simply continued with a refill prescription.
Never take it with an opioid. Taking a benzodiazepine together with an opioid painkiller is the most dangerous combination on this page. Both classes of medication slow breathing rates, and taking them together slows breathing more than either drug would alone. The FDA added a boxed warning to these combinations in 2016. Studies have found that overdose deaths from opioids increase up to four times over when benzodiazepines are also being taken.
Side effects of bromazepam 6mg. The common side effects of bromazepam are drowsiness, unsteadiness, dizziness, muscle weakness and difficulty concentrating. The risk of falls is increased in the elderly. Bromazepam impairs driving. Alcohol multiplies every one of these side effects.
Stopping it. Bromazepam should not be stopped abruptly after regular use. Abrupt discontinuation can lead to rebound anxiety, insomnia and in some cases seizures. The doctor will set a schedule by which the dose is reduced, and it will likely be a slower process than the patient expects.
