What is Dormicum used for?
Midazolam is used for short-term insomnia, meaning trouble falling asleep or staying asleep that is bad enough to affect the following day. Midazolam is not meant for long-term use, and it does not treat the causes of poor sleep.
Why the short half-life matters. Midazolam has a half-life of 1.5 to 2.5 hours. That is very short by benzodiazepine standards. This is why midazolam is suitable for sleeping, since it works through the early part of the night and little of the drug is left in the system by morning.
Dose. The standard adult dose is 15mg taken at bedtime. For people over the age of 65, or those with breathing or heart problems, the recommended dose is 7.5mg. In studies using doses of 15mg, patients had a 40 minute reduction in the time it took them to fall asleep, while those taking 7.5mg experienced a 31 minute reduction.
It affects memory. Midazolam causes anterograde amnesia more strongly than other benzodiazepines. This means events that happen after taking the tablet may not be remembered. This can be an issue for patients who take the tablet but remain up instead of going to bed.
Interactions are severe with this one. Midazolam is broken down by the enzyme CYP3A4 in the liver. Medications that block that enzyme can sharply increase the levels of midazolam in the blood. Ketoconazole, voriconazole and ritonavir have all been shown to increase exposure to midazolam by ten to fourteen times. Oral midazolam should not be taken with ritonavir, which is a component of Paxlovid. Grapefruit juice blocks the same enzyme and should also be avoided.
Never take it with an opioid. Taking a benzodiazepine together with an opioid painkiller is dangerous. Both classes of drugs slow breathing, and the combination can decrease breathing rates to the point of causing death. The combination of these two drug classes should be avoided rather than managed.
Side effects of Dormicum 15mg. The common side effects include drowsiness the next morning, unsteadiness, dizziness and confusion. These effects are stronger in older people, who also fall more often, and that is why they are given a lower dose. Alcohol worsens all of these effects and should not be combined with it.
