What is lormetazepam used for?
Lormetazepam is used for the short-term treatment of insomnia. That covers both difficulty falling asleep and waking repeatedly during the night. It is not used to treat the reasons behind poor sleep, and it is not meant to be taken for months as a sleep aid.
How the body clears it. Lormetazepam is broken down in a single step to an inactive substance. It produces no significant active breakdown products, so it is unlikely that the drug builds up in the system from one night's use to the next. This is unusual among benzodiazepines and is one of the main advantages of this one.
Dosage. The adult dose is 1mg taken at bedtime. Older patients are given 0.5mg. The dose can be doubled in individual cases, which is where the 2mg tablet comes in, though that is a decision for the prescriber to make rather than one you make yourself.
Side effects of lormetazepam 1mg. The common side effects are drowsiness the following morning, unsteadiness, dizziness and problems with concentration. These effects are more marked in the elderly, who are also more likely to fall. Alcohol will make all of this worse and should not be combined with it.
Never take it with an opioid. Taking a benzodiazepine along with an opioid painkiller is dangerous. Both of these classes of drugs can slow breathing, and taking the two together can slow breathing even more than either drug alone. The FDA has carried a boxed warning on these drugs since 2016, and studies have found that taking benzodiazepines and opioids together can increase the risk of overdose deaths by as much as four times.
