What is nitrazepam used for?
Nitrazepam is used for the short-term treatment of insomnia. It can help people to fall asleep and stay asleep throughout the night. It does not treat the cause of the insomnia, and it should not be used on a nightly basis for months in a row.
A long half-life for a sleeping tablet. The half-life of nitrazepam averages around 28 hours, though reported figures range from 16 to 48 hours. This is rather long for a sleeping tablet. The drug is still in the patient's system the following day, and it continues to accumulate with nightly use.
The hangover effect. This is the trade-off with nitrazepam. Grogginess, slowed thinking, clumsiness and slower reaction times can carry over into the following day, which is often described as a hangover effect. Never take it with an opioid. Taking a benzodiazepine along with an opioid painkiller is dangerous.
