What is diazepam 10mg used for?
Diazepam has more licensed uses than most benzodiazepines. Beyond treating anxiety, it is used to treat muscle spasm and spasticity, alcohol withdrawal, and some types of seizures. It is also used prior to operations to reduce the anxiety that patients may feel in those situations.
Dosage. The adult dose is usually between 2mg and 10mg, taken two to four times daily, depending on the condition being treated. Alcohol withdrawal is dosed differently, with 10mg taken three or four times within the first 24 hours, after which 5mg is taken as needed.
It stays in the body a long time. Diazepam has a half-life of about 46 hours. It is also broken down into an active substance called desmethyldiazepam, which has a half-life of around 100 hours. Between them, the effect of diazepam can last for days after taking it, and the drug builds up in the system with regular use.
Age changes this considerably. In younger adults the half-life of diazepam averages around 31 hours, but in older adults it averages around 86 hours. Older adults accumulate more of the drug from the same dose, which is why lower doses are used in that group, and why falls are a particular concern.
Never take it with an opioid. Taking a benzodiazepine together with an opioid painkiller is dangerous. Both classes of drugs slow breathing, and taking them together slows breathing even more than either drug alone would. The Food and Drug Administration added a boxed warning about this combination in 2016. Studies have found that taking a benzodiazepine in combination with an opioid multiplies overdose deaths by as much as four times.
Side effects of diazepam 10mg. The common side effects of diazepam are drowsiness, unsteadiness, muscle weakness, dizziness, and problems with concentration and memory. Because the drug wears off so slowly, drowsiness may extend into the next day and the day after taking the medication. Diazepam can impair the ability to drive a car, and alcohol will make each of these side effects worse.
Stopping it. Diazepam should not be stopped suddenly after regular use. Suddenly quitting the medication can lead to rebound anxiety, insomnia, tremor and in some cases seizures. Because of the long half-life, withdrawal symptoms may not begin until several days after the last dose rather than the next morning. The process of coming off diazepam is done gradually over a period of time as set out by the prescribing doctor.
