Oxazepam 10mg: Uses, Dosage and How It Differs from Diazepam
- Pack: 3 strips × 10 tabs = 30 tabs
- Category: Anxiety & Sleep

Oxazepam 10mg is a benzodiazepine tablet and the standard strength for everyday use. It is one of the milder benzodiazepines in the way it arrives, because of how the body absorbs it: slowly, rather than quickly.

What is oxazepam used for?
Oxazepam is used for anxiety and tension, for anxiety with sleep problems, and for symptoms of alcohol withdrawal. It is only meant to be taken for short courses of treatment.
Oxazepam and diazepam are related. Oxazepam is one of the substances that diazepam breaks down into within the body. Diazepam breaks down into nordiazepam, and nordiazepam breaks down into oxazepam. Taking oxazepam means starting the process at the end of that chain instead of the beginning of it.
No active breakdown products. That is why oxazepam does not create any active substances on its way out. The oxazepam is attached to a sugar molecule by the liver and excreted in the urine, and the result has no effect on the body. Liver disease and ageing affect this process far less than they affect the breakdown of diazepam.
Dosage. For mild to moderate anxiety the dose is usually between 10mg and 15mg, taken three or four times daily. Higher dosages are prescribed for severe anxiety and alcohol withdrawal. The exact schedule is set by the prescribing doctor, based on the condition being treated.
Side effects of oxazepam 10mg. The common side effects are drowsiness, dizziness, unsteadiness and weakness. Alcohol should be avoided because it makes these effects worse. Older people are more sensitive to these effects, especially the drowsiness and unsteadiness, so falls are the main concern in that age group.

Common questions
What is the difference between oxazepam and diazepam?
They are closely related, since oxazepam is one of the substances diazepam becomes in the body, and the differences between the two follow from that. Diazepam is long-acting, and its breakdown products stay active for days. Oxazepam is shorter-acting, has no active breakdown products, and takes longer to come on. For those reasons oxazepam is often prescribed for older patients and for those with liver problems, while diazepam suits situations that need a long, steady effect.
How long does oxazepam take to work and how long does it last?
The half-life of oxazepam is roughly 5 to 15 hours, which places it in the middle of the range. It is absorbed slowly, so the effect builds rather than arriving suddenly, and it does not accumulate much between doses.
Is oxazepam a strong benzodiazepine?
Not a strong one in the way it arrives. It takes a while to get into the system, and nothing that leaves the body afterwards is still active. This is why it is often prescribed to older patients or to those with poor liver function.
How does oxazepam compare with other benzodiazepines?
Oxazepam is the slowest of the benzodiazepines to come on, and it is cleared without producing anything active. Those two things together make it one of the gentler options, which is why it is chosen for older patients and in liver disease. Alprazolam sits at the opposite end, arriving fast and wearing off fast, while diazepam stays in the body for days.
