What is dexamfetamine used for?

Dexamfetamine is used in the treatment of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder in children aged six years and over, as part of a wider treatment programme rather than on its own. It is also used to control narcolepsy, a long-term sleep disorder in which people fall asleep during the day.

How it is taken. The daily dose of dexamfetamine for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder is usually between 5mg and 20mg. Treatment starts on a low dose and is increased in steps, and the 5mg tablet is the unit those steps are built from. The dose is set by a specialist rather than adjusted at home.

What gets monitored. Dexamfetamine raises the heart rate and blood pressure. A doctor checks heart health before treatment starts and during it. In children, height and weight are tracked as well, because appetite is often reduced and growth can be affected over time.

Side effects of dexamfetamine 5mg. The common side effects are a reduced appetite, difficulty sleeping, headache and a dry mouth. Doses taken late in the day interfere with sleep, which is why the last dose is usually taken in the afternoon rather than the evening.

Common questions

What is the difference between lisdexamfetamine and dexamfetamine?

Lisdexamfetamine is an inactive substance until the body converts it. Within the red blood cells it is broken down into dexamfetamine and the amino acid lysine, and only then does it begin to work. Dexamfetamine itself is already active when taken. Because of that conversion step the doses are not comparable, with lisdexamfetamine prescribed at 30mg to 70mg a day against 5mg to 20mg for dexamfetamine.

Is Tentin the same as dexamfetamine 5mg?

Tentin is one of the brand names dexamfetamine is sold under in Europe. Amfexa and Attentin are others. All of them contain dexamfetamine sulfate, and the strength printed on the box is what matters rather than the brand name on it.

Is dexamfetamine sulfate the same as dexamfetamine?

The full chemical name of the drug in the tablet is dexamfetamine sulfate. That is the salt the drug is made into, and the strength on the box refers to it. Dexamfetamine 5mg and dexamfetamine sulfate 5mg are the same medicine at the same strength.

How is dexamfetamine different from modafinil?

Both can treat some of the same sleepiness, but they are not the same kind of medicine. Dexamfetamine is a stimulant of the amphetamine family. Modafinil promotes wakefulness without being an amphetamine, and in Europe its licence covers narcolepsy alone. Dexamfetamine is also licensed for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, which modafinil is not.
