When is the higher dose used?
Higher doses are used for severe anxiety and alcohol withdrawal. The doctor who prescribed the drug will establish the dose to be taken and for how long. The goal is to gradually reduce the dose rather than take the drug for an extended period of time.
Physical dependence. Oxazepam can cause physical dependence if the medication is regularly taken for several weeks. This is not the same as addiction. Physical dependence means that the body has adjusted to the presence of the medication but reacts to its removal. This type of dependence forms in individuals who take oxazepam exactly as prescribed to them by their doctor.
Stopping it. Oxazepam should not be stopped abruptly after regular use at this strength. Stopping abruptly can lead to withdrawal symptoms such as rebound anxiety, insomnia, tremor and in some cases seizures. The doctor will create a schedule for reducing the dose slowly. The time taken to taper the dose down is usually longer than the patient expects.
The combination to avoid. Combining a benzodiazepine with an opioid painkiller is the most dangerous interaction on this page. Both classes of drugs slow breathing. Taking them together slows breathing considerably more than either drug alone. There is a boxed warning for this combination, which states that these two drug classes should not be taken together.

Is oxazepam 50mg a high dose?
This is a higher dosage than is typically prescribed. Most individuals who suffer from anxiety do not require this dosage of oxazepam. It is only prescribed to individuals whose lower doses have been tried and found insufficient to relieve their symptoms. It is not a dose to reach on your own.
How long can you take oxazepam for?
These are usually short courses, a few weeks at most, including the time needed to reduce the dose. Benzodiazepines lose some of their effect over time. Dependence develops with longer use. Courses that last longer than a few weeks should be reviewed rather than simply continued through repeat prescriptions.
Is oxazepam 50mg suitable for older patients?
Older patients require lower doses of benzodiazepines and oxazepam is no exception. They are more sensitive to the effects of sedation and unsteadiness, so falls are a real danger for them. A 50mg tablet is not the starting dose for an elderly patient.
What is the difference between oxazepam 10mg and 50mg?
Both tablets contain oxazepam and nothing else differs between them chemically. What differs is who they are for. The 10mg tablet is for ordinary anxiety treatment and is the strength most patients stay on. The 50mg tablet belongs to a specific situation that a prescriber has identified. Taking five of the smaller tablets is not the same decision as being prescribed the larger one.
