What the 300mg dose is used for
For bipolar depression, the recommended and maximum dose is 300mg once a day. For schizophrenia, the effective dose range is between 150mg and 750mg per day for the patient. One clinical trial found that 300mg was the dose that produced the maximum effect from the drug.
This is long-term treatment. Quetiapine is a long-term treatment for the conditions that it has been licensed for. The drug is not prescribed for short periods of time. Preventing relapse is one of the conditions for which this drug has been licensed. After the manic or depressive episode associated with bipolar disorder has passed, the drug is often continued in the treatment of the patient.
Monitoring matters more at this dose, not less. Weight, blood sugar and blood fats are tracked throughout treatment with quetiapine, as well as before treatment starts. Sedation is more noticeable at full doses than at lower doses of the drug. The drop in blood pressure when standing is also more noticeable at full doses.
Never stop abruptly. Quetiapine should not be stopped suddenly after regular use. The condition being treated can come back. The drug is slowly reduced under the guidance of the prescriber.

Common questions
Is a higher dose of quetiapine better?
No. Taking more of the drug does not always mean more benefit from the drug. The side effects increase with higher doses.
What happens if you stop quetiapine suddenly?
Nausea, headache, difficulty sleeping and irritability are the usual results. These develop within a few days of stopping the drug.
Is quetiapine used for anxiety?
Quetiapine is not licensed for the treatment of anxiety. It is licensed for the treatment of schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and major depression as an add-on therapy. Anxiety can occur alongside these conditions. Treating these conditions will often reduce the anxiety associated with them. Giving the drug to treat anxiety alone is off-label.
What is the difference between quetiapine and Seroquel XR?
Seroquel XR is a formulation that releases the drug slowly over time and is taken once daily. The standard tablet releases the drug quickly and is taken twice daily for the treatment of schizophrenia. The two forms are not interchangeable and are prescribed according to the condition being treated by the prescriber.
