What is quetiapine used for?
Quetiapine is licensed for three things. The first is the treatment of schizophrenia. The second is bipolar disorder, covering manic episodes, depressive episodes and relapse prevention. The third is as an add-on therapy in major depression, when an antidepressant alone has not been sufficient.
The dose is built up. The dose is built up over the first few days of taking the medicine. A typical pattern is 50mg on the first day, 100mg on the second, 200mg on the third and 300mg on the fourth. The 100mg tablet is one of the steps along the path to the higher doses, not the goal itself.
Low-dose off-label use. Quetiapine is often prescribed off-label at lower doses, usually 100mg or less, because of the sedation it produces. That use is not licensed anywhere. It is also not without consequence, because the effects on metabolism show up at low doses as well.
Side effects of quetiapine 100mg. Common side effects include drowsiness, dizziness, dry mouth and weight gain. Feeling faint when standing up is also common early in treatment, which is part of why the dose is built up slowly.

Is quetiapine used for sleep?
Quetiapine is not licensed for insomnia in any country. It is prescribed off-label for sleep because of its sedating effect, and the doses used are low. The difficulty is that its effects on weight, blood sugar and blood fats occur at low doses too, so the trade-off is less favourable than the sedation alone suggests. Whether it is appropriate is a decision for a prescriber who can see the whole picture.
Is Seroquel the same as quetiapine 100mg?
Seroquel is the brand name under which quetiapine was first sold. Seroquel and quetiapine contain the same drug. Seroquel XR is a once-a-day version that releases the drug slowly, which makes it a different product from the standard tablet even though the drug inside is the same.
Is 100mg a low dose of quetiapine?
It is a step on the way up rather than a treatment dose for most conditions. For schizophrenia the useful range runs from 150mg to 750mg a day. For bipolar depression the recommended dose is 300mg a day. Someone taking 100mg is usually either partway through building up, or taking it for something the licence does not cover.
How is quetiapine different from a sleeping tablet?
Quetiapine is not a sleeping tablet and it is not a benzodiazepine. Medicines like zopiclone and zolpidem are licensed for insomnia and designed for it, whereas quetiapine is licensed for psychiatric conditions and produces sedation as a side effect.
